What size hole punch for Press Snaps?

Antonia Marino

Using the correct hole punch size for press snaps is essential to ensure a secure fit and proper function. If the hole is too small, the snap post won’t fit through, making installation difficult or causing material distortion. If the hole is too large, the snap may not grip properly, leading to a weak hold or eventual failure.

Setting press snaps on leather purse

Here’s why each size is recommended:

  • Glove snaps (2mm) – These have small posts, so a snug 2mm hole keeps them secure without excess movement.
  • Sigma Line 16 (2.5mm or 4mm) – The required hole size depends on the specific snap post used; 2.5mm for a tighter fit, or 4mm for thicker materials or longer posts.
  • Line 20 (2mm) – A 2mm hole ensures the post fits snugly while allowing the snap to be set firmly.
  • Line 24 (3.5mm) – These snaps have thicker posts, requiring a slightly larger hole to accommodate the post without tearing the material.

A well-sized hole ensures the snap post passes through cleanly while allowing the cap and socket to press together securely.

Adjusting for Post Length

  • If the post is too long – The snap may not set properly or could become loose over time. To fix this, use a leather washer or an extra layer of material to add thickness.
  • If the post is too short – The snap won’t grip securely. To remedy this, skive the leather (thin it down) in the area where the snap is placed, ensuring a better fit without compromising durability.

Testing on a scrap piece before final installation can help achieve the best results.
