Upholstery Tip #24: Protect your foam

Antonia Marino

When reupholstering a chair, it’s important to take steps to protect your foam rubber to acheive the longest lifespan as possible.  One simple but often overlooked trick is adding a layer of fabric, calico or hessian over the seating webbing before placing the foam. This small step can prevent unnecessary wear and tear, saving you from replacing your foam sooner than needed.

Why Does Foam Deteriorate?

Without a barrier, the foam sits directly on the webbing and moves against it every time the seat is used. Over time, this friction causes the edges of the webbing to cut into the foam. A simple fabric layer helps distribute weight more evenly and prevents direct rubbing along the webbing edges, keeping both the foam and webbing in better shape.

How to Apply a Protective Layer

To create this protective barrier, loosely place fabric over the seat’s webbing, making sure it has a little give without restricting movement. Staple or tack around the fabric, keeping the edges of the fabric inside the frame. Folding the edges over can stop the fabric from fraying towards the staples.
