Upholstery Tip #18 Choosing your Foundation Layer
Tip #18: Choose your foundation
Just like a building, an upholstered chair needs a strong foundation. This foundation isn't just about making the chair look good; it’s what supports the stuffing, fabric, and ultimately, the person sitting on it.
Most chairs use either elastic or jute webbing as their support base, but other materials like wood, strapping, metal, or even plastic can also be used.
When reupholstering, it’s usually best to replace like with like. If your chair has elastic webbing and foam, stick with that. If it has springs, keep those. However, if you’re thinking of swapping out jute webbing and springs for elastic webbing and foam, there are a few things to consider:
Replacing spring system with elastic webbing
PROS
- Elastic webbing is easier and quicker to install than jute webbing and springs.
- Elastic webbing can create a softer, more cushioned feel, which some might prefer.
- Elastic webbing tends to be quieter. Springs can sometimes squeak over time.
CONS
- Elastic webbing can stretch out and lose its elasticity over time, leading to sagging. Springs are generally more durable and long-lasting than elastic webbing.
- Elastic webbing might not offer the same level of support. Springs provide firmer support, which can be crucial for heavier or high-use furniture.
- If you're working with an antique chair, replacing the springs with elastic webbing can reduce its authenticity and value.
Pro Tip:
When choosing between elastic webbing and jute webbing, it’s important to understand their different uses.
Elastic webbing is usually installed directly on top of the seat frame and serves as a flexible support layer beneath the foam. It provides a bit of bounce and is often used in modern furniture for a softer feel.
Jute webbing, on the other hand, is typically placed beneath the seat frame, with coil springs positioned on top of the webbing, inside the frame. This setup is common in traditional or higher-end furniture, where the jute webbing and springs work together to provide a firmer and more durable seat. Keep in mind, there are exceptions depending on the design and style of the piece!
Before making any changes, consider whether your chair’s foundation is built to handle the switch. A solid base is key to ensuring your chair is both comfortable and durable.
