A Guide to Cleaning & Restoring Leather
Antonia MarinoIn this general guide, we'll explore a step-by-step instructions on how to restore the leather on your handbag, bringing back its luster and extending its lifespan.
Materials You'll Need:
- Saddle soap
- Soft, lint-free cloths or sponges
- Leather conditioner, balm or cream
- Soft brush
- Cotton swabs
Step 1: Wipe the Leather Surface
Before beginning the restoration process, it's important to clean the leather bag thoroughly. Gently wipe down the entire surface of the handbag, paying special attention to areas with crevices that can collect dust.
Step 2: Clean the surface

Use a soft brush and saddle soap to gently scrub the affected areas. Be cautious not to apply too much pressure, as vigorous scrubbing can lead to damage. Clean one panel at a time, and wipe off with a clean cloth. Roll towels and place into the bag to keep its shape whilst it is drying. Give it a day or more to dry thoroughly.
Step 3: Hydrate with Leather Conditioner
Once the handbag is clean and dry, apply a generous amount of leather conditioner, balm or cream. Massage the conditioner into the leather in circular motions. This step not only moisturizes the leather but also helps restore its natural shine and suppleness. Allow the conditioner to be absorbed for at least 15-20 minutes, then buff.
Obviously this is a basic maintenance plan. Other repairs and maintenance may need to be done such as removing stubborn stains, re-colouring, fixing broken seams, regluing leather tears, filling scratches etc.
