Cleaning and Maintaining a Leather Bag
Antonia MarinoRestoring an old leather is a great way to bring it back to life. Over time, leather can become dry, stained, or scuffed, but with the right care, you can make it look fresh again. Here’s a step-by-step guide using quality products to clean, condition, and protect your handbag.

1. Start by dusting the item with a soft microfibre cloth or a horsehair brush to remove any surface dirt and debris. Pay attention to seams and stitching where grime can collect.
2.a. Use a mild leather cleaner or saddle soap. Dampen a small soft brush or cloth with a little water and add saddle soap. Gently work it into the leather in circular motions, section by section. Wipe off excess soap with a clean damp cloth.
2.b. If the item is filthy, you may need to wash the bag in a basin of warm soapy water first, rinsing well. This isn't recommended unless no other option is available.
3. After cleaning, let the bag dry naturally. Stuff the interior with clean towels to help maintain its shape and absorb moisture. Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat sources like radiators or hairdryers. Allow it to air dry for at least 24 to 48 hours or move for thick leather.
4. Check for damage and repair. Some tools and supplies you might need is leather filler, glue, needle & thread, and replacement clasps & catches, bag feet, buckles etc. We have a vast array of leather hardware and tools at Mollies.

5. Apply a leather conditioner to restore moisture and keep the leather from drying out and cracking. Use a fingers or a soft cloth to massage a small amount of conditioner into the leather in circular motions. Let it absorb for 15 to 30 minutes, then buff with a clean cloth to smooth the finish.
6. If the leather has faded, apply a coloured cream or leather dye in thin layers using a sponge or soft brush. Let each layer dry. Ensure you read the instructions of the product regarding protective coats and application.
7. Apply a leather balm or wax to guard against moisture and scuffs. Rub a small amount into the leather using a cloth and buff to a soft shine. For extra water resistance, use a leather waterproofing product.
8. To maintain your leather handbag, store it in a dust bag when not in use, keep it away from direct sunlight, and wipe it down regularly with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or household cleaners, as they can strip the leather’s natural oils.
